  CHANGE IN THE UNIFORM OF CRPF

In 2020, the Army has asked Ministries of Defence and Home to issue guidelines to ensure that state police forces and CAPFs do not wear ‘disruptive-pattern uniform', referred to as ‘combat uniform’, while on law and order duties.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has asked Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel to procure their new combat uniform, which has been approved by the competent authority to provide more “comfort and sustainability” to them.

“After coordinating with the Northern India Textile Research Association and other experts, the CRPF has decided to change their combat uniform after almost 10 years. The Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) of CRPF already has a digital print, so they are not changing and also Rapid Action Force (RAF) (are not changing).

On February 23, 2020, following violent clashes in Northeast Delhi’s Jafrabad, pictures emerged of security personnel wearing combat-pattern uniforms closely resembling that of the Indian Army being deployed in the area. As the pictures and videos went viral on social media — some were posted on Twitter — word spread that the Army had been called out in the area.

CRPF

The Central Reserve Police Force came into existence as Crown Representative’s Police on 27th July 1939. It became the Central Reserve Police Force on enactment of the CRPF Act on 28th December 1949. It has completed 83 years of glorious history. The Force has grown into a big organization with 246 Bns, (including 208 executive Bns, 6 Mahila Bns, 15 RAF Bns, 10 CoBRA Bns, 5 Signal Bns and 1 Special Duty Group1 Parliament Duty Group), 43 Group Centres, 20 Training Institutions, 3 CWS, 7 AWS, 2 SWS,1 MWS, 4 Composite Hospitals of 100 bedded and 17 Composite Hospitals of 50 bedded.

Mission

The mission of the Central Reserve Police Force shall be to enable the government to maintain Rule of Law, Public Order and Internal Security effectively and efficiently, to Preserve National Integrity and Promote Social Harmony and Development by upholding supremacy of the Constitution.

Vision

Broad duties being performed by the CRPF are:

  • Crowd control

  • Riot control

  • Counter Militancy / Insurgency operations.

  • Dealing with Left Wing Extremism

    Sustained ops endeavours of CRPF has yielded in containing the expansion of CPI Maoists considerably, reducing LWE affected districts to 45 in year 2022 from 95 in year 2010. 544 Maoists had been neutralized, 13639 apprehended and 5598 surrendered since year 2010. Reduction in CPI Maoists violence activities accelerated development in remote areas. 393 CRPF personnel made supreme sacrifice while combating LWE since year 2010.

  • Overall co-ordination of large scale security arrangement specially with regard to elections in disturbed areas.

  • Protection of VIPs and vital installations.

  • Fighting aggression during War time.

  • Participating in UN Peace Keeping Mission.

  • Rescue and Relief operations at the time of Natural Calamities and disasters.

CoBRA

Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) is a specialized force which has been raised for guerilla/jungle warfare type operations for dealing with Maoist and therefore also known as ‘jungle warriors’. Personnel for CoBRA are selected from CRPF as CoBRA is integral part of CRPF. Hallmarks of CoBRA are Courage, Zeal and Patriotism. They undergo rigorous commando & jungle warfare training before being posted to CoBRA BNs for anti naxal operations. In all there are 10 CoBRA Units Raised between 2008-2011. After fully trained, equipped all the 10 BNs deployed in all LWE/insurgent affected areas of Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya. CoBRA in one of the best Central Armed Police in the Country trained to survive, fight and win in the jungle and unquestionably/ undoubtedly the best CAP in the Country.

Rapid Action Force

RAF stands for "Rapid Action Force". A specialized force, It was raised in Oct 1992 with 10 Bn's which has now been increased to 15 Bn's as 5 more units have been added w.e.f 01/01/2018. These units were set up to deal with riots and riot like situations, to instill confidence amongst all sections of the society and also, handle internal security duty.

RAF is a zero response force which gets to the crisis situation within a minimal time, thus enthuses an immediate sense of security and confidence amongst the general public.

RAF trained male and female contingents for UN peace keeping mission to different countries (i.e. Haiti, Kosovo, Liberia, etc) every year, continue to earn accolades and excellence in international forum for their highest order of professionalism.

About Organisation

This specialized force has 15 battalions which are numbered 99 to 108 and 83, 91, 97, 114, 194.It is headed by an officer of the rank of Inspector general .

The smallest functional unit in the force is a 'Team' commanded by an inspector, has three components namely riot control element, tear smoke element and fire element. It has been organised as an independent striking unit.

One team in a company of RAF is comprised of women personnel so as to deal more effectively with situation where the force forces women demonstrators.
